Inventory goes missing between receiving, storage, and fulfillment. Amazon catches a lot of these automatically now, but not every case. Anything that slips through, you've only got 60 days to catch it yourself before the window closes for good.
If a unit is damaged while in Amazon's control, it's their responsibility to reimburse you. Amazon auto reimburses most of these these days too, but not all of them, so it still needs someone checking for what falls through.
A customer gets refunded but sends back the wrong product, a damaged one, or nothing at all. Most of these get caught automatically now as well, but the ones that don't still have to be filed within 45 to 105 days, so this one's worth checking regularly rather than assuming Amazon's got it.
When you remove stock from Amazon, in transit loss or damage during that shipment is still on them. This is the one category Amazon never catches automatically, no exceptions, so you have to check for it and file it yourself every time.
